  1. Develop a Robust Remote Workflow for Editors
    You can’t just hire an editor and tell them to edit your projects. They need clear processes and tools for media sharing, project management, revisions, asset and subscription management, and accountability that often needs to happen multiple times throughout the day.
    You’ll spend at least 6 months trying to figure this process out to hopefully get it right the first time.
     

  2. Become a Master Manager
    Now that you have an editor, it’s time to onboard them to the processes and workflows you built back in Step 1. Over the course of a couple months, you will learn that everyone gives and receives feedback differently. Not only will you be giving feedback to them, but they will be giving feedback to you.

    You will also learn that not everyone is a good fit. We’ve hired people who seemed great initially, only for them to become the opposite within the course of a week or two. Learning how to hire is important, but learning how to manage is more important.

    You’ll need to spend 2-3 hours per day managing your editor and the process.

  3. Successfully Bring on New Clients (And Balance It All)
    The entire point of bringing on a new editor is to free up time you’d be editing so that you can leverage that time to do more higher value work, and bring on new clients. You must balance the needs of your editor with the reason you hired them in the first in the first place.

    Failure to manage both properly leads to either an unhappy editor, or a lack in new business, negating the benefit of hiring one in the first place. You’ll also spend upwards of $80K for salary and benefits on top of the hiring process.
